Prickly pear cactus are found throughout the deserts of the American Southwest, with different species having adapted to different locale and elevation ranges. Ed Swena captures the essence of a common variety found in Arizona desert areas. Most require coarse, well-drained soil in dry, rocky flats or slopes.
