Defeat at Bear Mountain by Ed Swena  – This sculpture portrays the discarded battle gear of the great leader, Chief Joseph as he uttered “I Will Fight No More Forever”.  The battle gear also expresses the end of a journey and the start of the decline of another Indian Nation.

After 72 years of peace, the Nez Perce tribe and settlers were in confrontation and U.S. Army troops were called in.  At the 5 day battle at Bear Mountain Chief Joseph put aside his military skills, expressed compassion for his people and surrendered peacefully expressing these fateful words.
