Grounds For Sculpture Announces the Passing of Our Founder

It is with great sadness that we announce our founder Seward Johnson has passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at his home in Key West Florida. His last days were spent surrounded by family, friends, and love.
His boundless spirit, sense of humor, and vibrancy will be deeply missed by those who knew him. It can’t be put into words the loss that will be felt by the artists, staff, volunteers, and members of our community that have found joy in his artwork and in their connections to him.
Seward Johnson leaves a remarkable legacy. Through his sculptures, that generously invite the public to engage and interact, he has touched the hearts of millions across the world. The Seward Johnson Atelier has nurtured a generation of artists who have made a creative living and lasting friendships through this community of sculptors he made possible. Grounds For Sculpture has grown over the last three decades to become one of the most beloved art institutions in our region and an essential beacon for sculptors worldwide.
His commitment to making art approachable and accessible to the broadest cross-section of the public has been at the heart of Seward Johnson’s artwork and his vision for Grounds For Sculpture. We hope the joy, discovery, and surprise found in the unique experience of art and nature will bring some comfort and solace as we collectively mourn his loss. The board, staff, volunteers, and community now have the responsibility and honor to carry forth his vision and serve as stewards of this legacy.
A memorial celebration and opportunities to honor his vibrant and creative life will be scheduled in the coming months. At this time, we send our deepest condolences to the Johnson family.
Gary Garrido Schneider

Executive Director

I never did meet Seward Johnson, but I so admired the man for what he did for sculpture in bringing it to the forefront of our minds. He really knew and understood sculpture and how to make it shout so nicely. May the Lord Bless his Soul. – Bill West
