Nostrils flared, eyes focused, ears alert . . . this was the charging mount of a Sioux warrior.
With the advent of the horse around 1742 the nomadic Sioux then moved more freely, hunted Buffalo more efficiently and tried to acquire horses from neighboring tribes. But their way of life was threatened when settlers moved into the Great Plains. With broken treaties, war ensued.
War Pony is shown with three coups or successful conflicts as Sioux warriors used their artistic sense to portray their personal history on their horses. The sculptor chose to model only the head of the horse to convey motion.
