Michele quarried this stone because of its unique and rough texture. She left this stone outside in her studio for over 35 years. The exposure to the elements enhanced the existing textural hardness and sharpness. The inside of the stone was a complete surprise to the artist due to its unique colors and patterns. The density of this sculpture is in contrast to the open tunnel inside, taking the viewer on a journey through the stone.
This piece of anhydrite-alabaster was quarried from US Gypsum Quarry in Anza-Borrego. Anhydrite is a white mineral that occurs in evaporite deposits.
