Massive Bronze Eagle with Extended Wings Perched on a Rock. Japanese Meiji, circa 1875
A perched eagle with wings spread, consisting of three separate bronze pieces: the rock on which the rapier’s claws grasp; the bird itself; and on the bird’s feathered back a removable cover piece revealing a hollow interior within the body of the eagle for hiding coins and/or jewels. Other than a tiny missing tip of one tail feather, the bronze is in excellent condition.
