more about the artist:
Frederick Hart was an American sculptor-artist. One of his famous sculptures is the Three Soldiers statue at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Ex Nihiio (1983) showcasing Creation scenes above the doors of the Washington National Cathedral. The sculptor’s bas relief of resin, bronze, and stone works binding the religious figurative with contemporary processes to create an expressive sculpture. Mr. Hart was born June 7, 1943 in Atlanta, GA. His academic studies at the University of South Carolina were cut short after his participation in a Civil Rights protest in 1961 attracted the attention of the KKK, causing him to leave for Washington, D.C. There, Hart found a calming yet creative satisfaction in the Corcoran School of Art, quickly moving toward stone carving and winning a design competition for a sculptural facade on the Washington National Cathedral. Notably, Hart was a true pioneer with cast resin sculpture quite late in his career. He passed away on August 13, 1999 in Baltimore, MD, and was posthumously awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2004.
