About Sig de Tonancour

Sig deTonancour Everyone always asks me at the art festivals "How long does it take you to create a piece?" I always say it's not the time, it's the intensity. I work with a lot of intensity and passion! My work ranges from impressionism, to art nouveau and ultra-realism. Sensuality and movement are the goals I strive for in each sculpture. I am inspired by love and nature. I search for wood burls and stones that are very unique; many are already natural abstract works of art formed by nature, my only true art teacher! My original works in bronze begin with a sculpture in clay, wax or resin. The original sculpture is then covered with a mold rubber and then on through “the lost wax process.” We finish and patina the bronze sculptures at the Genesis Bronze Foundry in Paso Robles, California. I began sculpting professionally in 1974. Some of my background includes: Metallurgy at Greer Tech. in Chicago from 1961-1963. The Saturn 1-B moon rocket in Phoenix Arizona in 1966. The 42 ft. Aluminum antennae that broadcasts the winter lympics from Mexico City in 1968. Taught oxy-acetylene sculpture in Berkeley from 1971-1973. I then began working with sculptors Luis Antonio & Doris Munson in Carmel California. My work has evolved over the years from my beginnings in metals, then onto wood burls, a variety of stones; from alabaster, marble and onyx; then stainless steel and bronze. My sculptures are in collectors homes such as: Ken Boxley of the John Barymore estate, Beverly Hills. William Shatner; Steve Tyler of the band Aerosmith; Robert Shapiro – attorney; Hal Linden, actor; Kenny Holiday of the Josephine Baker Story – All sculptures featured in the movie Black Magic Woman starring Mark Hamill & Apollonia. My works are in many homes and institutions throughout the United States, Europe, Canada & Japan. My feelings on life can be summed up by the songs “Imagine” by John Lennon and “The Gates of Eden” by Bob Dylan. Stay Healthy, Stay Strong!
