About Norman Annis

Mr. Annis completed his undergraduate degree in English at what is currently the University of Northern Iowa and an M.F.A. in sculpture at The University of Iowa. He served as Professor of Art at Gettysburg College from 1960 to 1978 and then again from 1989 to 1999. During Mr. Annis’ original tenure at Gettysburg College, twenty-three pieces of his bronze sculptures were exhibited in Washington, D.C. From 1978 to 1987 and prior to returning to South Central PA, Norman served as Chair of the Department of Art and Design at what is now Missouri State University in Springfield, MO. On October 1970, the statue “Eisenhower at Gettysburg” sculpted and cast in bronze by Mr. Annis was installed on the grounds of Gettysburg College outside the office used by Eisenhower in retirement. Mr. Annis sculpted in a variety of media including bronze, wood and Cor-Ten steel. In addition to executing sculptures, Norman completed 3-D architectural renderings, lithographs and studied town planning and architecture. His distinguished teaching and professional art career spanned nearly five decades. Mr. Annis passed away in January 2018 at the age of 86.
