About Leonard DeLonga
Leonard DeLonga grew up in Canonsburg PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh. He obtained a BFA from the University of Miami, Florida in 1950 and a MFA from the University of Georgia in 1952 where he studied under noted artist Lamar Dodd. He married Sandra Katz in 1953 and had two children, Roy and Beth. DeLonga taught at Texas Wesleyan, Fort Worth Texas from 1954 to 1956 and the University of Georgia from 1956 to 1964 where he became a noteworthy sculptor specializing in welded steel and bronze. In 1964 he established the sculpture program at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA where he taught until his death in 1991. The school gave him unlimited freedom and resources to create a full scaled sculpture program that flourished under his care and direction. He was beloved by many of his students over the years.
DeLonga was represented by Kraushaar Galleries in New York York City from 1964 until his death in 1991 where he had numerous one man shows over the years. In addition, he had numerous exhibitions at museums, educational institutions and art festivals throughout the United States. His sculpture and paintings can be found in many private collections and museums including the Georgia Museum, Wilmington Museum, Deleware, Weiner Collection, Fort Worth, Texas, National Broadcasting Company, New York, Potamkin Collection, Philadelphia, Brody Collection, New York City, Ball State Teachers College, Muncie, Indiana, Cornell University, D.D Feldman Collection, New York and Dallas, University of Missouri, Mount Holyoke College, Springfield Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield, Massachusetts, LaGrange College, LaGrange Georgia, and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum.
