Artist Statement – Joseph

Sculpting is both a passionate challenge and a profound dialogue—between me, as the creator, and you, as the viewer. My intention is to craft objects of beauty that provoke conversation about the thematic tensions within each piece. The language of my art is duality, angst, breadth, and truth, expressed through the raw yet timeless mediums of clay and bronze.

Years ago, I walked away from a successful corporate career, realizing that true learning thrives under strong mentorship—a quality I found lacking in my former world. Learning is a lifelong pursuit, and while one mentor may have once sufficed, today’s expanding knowledge demands many.

For me, nature is the ultimate mentor. She creates; humanity merely tinkers. The scale and power of the natural world stretch our capacity to comprehend, and my time alone in fields and forests shaped my understanding of both warriorhood and peace. But nature is harder to find these days.

My latest series explores the complex relationship between humanity and nature. Technology has its place, but its role will only find balance when it learns to honor nature as a teacher. Each sculpture in this series weaves a narrative arc—designed to intrigue, challenge, and ultimately invite the viewer to question reality itself. Though beautiful at first glance, my sculptures aim to be much more. Look again. Creation is born from chaos. In my work, you’ll find both the raw energy of transformation and the sensuality of the physical form.

This series naturally evolves from my earlier explorations in portraiture, where my focus was on human connection—both with nature and with one another. Collaboration with my subjects was central to that work, and I sought to capture the essence of each individual through symbolic details, carefully chosen titles, and accompanying written narratives.

I sculpt both men and women, often in quarter- to three-quarter-life size, frequently nude. The absence of clothing removes the constraints of time, emphasizing our intrinsic connection to the natural world.

I choose to be known by my first name alone, a deliberate gesture of intimacy and personal connection. As individuals, we define ourselves within the vast tapestry of humanity, and through my sculptures, I extend my hand—seeking dialogue, seeking understanding, seeking connection.
